Challenges and benefits
of interviewing an international student (or an US student)
We can encounter some difficult
situations while interviewing with a student. To know these challenges will help
us get more benefits from our interview.
Especially, if we choose an international
student to interview, language differences and the conflict that stems from this difference, can be the first challenge. Not having same languages as
a native languages can create confusion.
Also, if the interviewee doesn’t show respect
to your work and even while he/she is unaware of the answer, if she/he gives
you one that means we should cross reference our data that we collect from our
interviewee. Thus we can avoid biased information too. On this point honesty is
so important. If we cannot get correct answers from our interviewee, that can
affect our conclusion.
Other than that some challenges can be caused specifically
by the interviewee. If our interviewee have a shy/incoming personality, if he/she
not punctual, if he/she has a lot of topics that make her/him uncomfortable to
talk about, our interview will be negatively affected and we can deal with some challenges
in out interview.
Additionally some challenges can cause from
interviewer. If the interviewer couldn’t create a well-organized environment to
interview, if she/he is not punctual, if she/he unaware from her/his topic or
not able to empathy with interviewee, our interview can affect negatively.
When we
look benefits of an interview with a student, two important ones should come to
our mind. First one is meeting with a new person and start to know about
him/her. Second one is being able to contact with a person who can provide us
information about our topic from the experiences that she/he have.
To
have a great interview, we should always have a second plan before to start our
interview. We should make a brainstorm about possible challenges that we can
face with during the interview. We should always remember to use empathy with
our interviewee.
